| 126th Annual
Banquet
A large gathering of Members, Fellows, and Friends
of The Holland Society of New York with their families
and guests attended the Society’s 126th Annual
Banquet at the Union Club in Manhattan on November
17, 2011. The gala event also celebrated Dutch-American
Heritage Day and honored this year’s Society
Gold Medalist, Gloria Vanderbilt. The evening began
with a cocktail reception in the club’s magnificent
grand hall, where Members and guests mingled and met
Gloria Vanderbilt, and Honored Guests Rob de Vos,
Dutch Consul General in New York of the Kingdom of
the Netherlands, Dr. Jurgen van der Velden, represented
the 3 October Vereeniging from Leiden, the Netherlands
Mrs. Kimmelman, Directress General of the Society
of the Daughters of Holland Dames, Dr. Firth Haring
Fabend, who represented the Huguenot Society of America.
Following cocktails, Holland Society President Charles
Zabriskie and his wife, Star, and Banquet Chairman
Stephen S. Wyckoff and his wife, Lori, formed a receiving
line with Gloria Vanderbilt at the entrance to the
main dining room—which was adorned with large
bouquets of flowers at each table—while members
of the Lester Lanin Orchestra played background music.
Once everyone had gathered in the dining room, Chairman
Steve Wyckoff welcomed the gathering and requested
that all stand for the traditional Parading of the
Beaver. This was followed by the singing of the Dutch
and American national anthems, the traditional Dutch
hymn “We Gather Together.” After the invocation
by the Reverend Everett L. Zabriskie III, President
Charles Zabriskie Jr. gave the traditional toast to
Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Consul
General de Vos to the President of the United States,
Chairman Wyckoff to Ms. Vanderbilt, and Gloria Vanderbilt
to The Holland Society.
Following a delicious three-course dinner with dancing
between courses to the music of the Lester Lanin Orchestra,
President Zabriskie introduced Gloria Vanderbilt and
presented her with the Society’s Gold Medal
for Outstanding Achievement in Art & Design. Ms.
Vanderbilt thanked the Society with a delightful and
heartfelt address.
With the formal program of the banquet concluded,
Chairman Steve Wyckoff thanked all of those who had
made the evening a success and urged those in attendance
to continue dancing to the music of the orchestra,
which many did until deep into the night.
