The Half Moon to Star at the New England Branch's Fall Event

Charles Zabriskie, Jr., Branch President, recently issued a “heads-up” letter to New England Branch members and Friends inviting them to participate in the arrival and visit of the Society's flagship, the Half Moon , on Sunday, October 17, 2010 , from 1:00-3:00 p.m. , at Goodwin College's Riverfront Campus on the Connecticut River in East Hartford. The ship will be docked at a pier adjoining Goodwin College . Captain Chip Reynolds will provide a private viewing and personally greet the members of the Branch followed by a wine and cheese reception. A donation of $50 each for adults is requested since a substantial portion of the expenses for the Half Moon's travels are borne by the New Netherland Museum of Albany, New York, where the ship is moored seasonally and repaired and updated during the winter season. Children accompanying adults are free. Checks should be made payable to the New Netherland Museum and mailed to Charles Zabriskie, Jr. at the address below. The monies raised for this event will be presented to Captain Chip Reynolds during the celebration of the nation's largest branch to thank the New Netherland Museum for its leadership in maintaining and sailing the living legend known as the Half Moon . Mailing the checks to the Branch President in advance is necessary since a reception is planned, regardless of the weather, and this will ensure that adequate food and wine are available for the attendees. This is a historic event and the first time the Society's ship has been on the Connecticut River in a number of years. I look forward to seeing all our members after our most successful annual luncheon at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury , Massachusetts , this past June.

New England Branch Meeting

On Saturday, June 5 th , on a bright, clear, and gorgeous day, 41 members and Friends gathered together outside the 294-year-old Inn in Sudbury, Massachusetts, the oldest continuously operating inn in the country, for the annual luncheon.

Special invited guests included President Colin Lazier and his wife, Barbara, and Henry Paap and his wife, Judy, Honorary Consul (retired) from the Dutch Consulate in Boston, who was recently knighted by Queen Beatrix. Our oldest member of the Society, F. Taylor Ostrander of Williamstown, Massachusetts, was mentioned as he will celebrate his 100 th birthday later this year. We also had the pleasure of seeing Chuck and Abigail Winans of Harwich Port and Vero Beach. Several years ago Chuck was presented his 50-year membership pin by the late John V. VanderBeek IV.

John Cowden, Innkeeper, provided a fantastic ride into the history of the luminaries and historical figures that stayed at or passed through the Inn, which encompasses much of New England's history since the 1700s.

Grace was said by the Rev. John Van Siclen, and as a special treat our newest member, the Van Siclen's son Peter from Springfield, played the saxophone while Pam Van Siclen accompanied her son with the flute.

Charles Zabriskie remarked, “The day and the event just couldn 't have been better.”
