The Pacific Northwest Branch of the Holland Society of New York
A Fall Weekend in Oregon Wine Country - Pacific Northwest Branch Meeting
On the weekend of 27 September, Neilson and Tori Abeel, Edwin and Tish Outwater, Eric and Ava TenBrook, John and Diane VanDerbeek,
and Richard and Vivienne Van Slyke of the Pacific Northwest Branch met in Portland Oregon.
On the evening of 26 September, a small group took advantage of an informal get together and had the opportunity to sample
Portland's exceptional seafood at Jake's Famous Crawfish , a city landmark since 1892.
Saturday's activities officially began with a visit to Chehalem, Lange and Tori Mor wineries in the Willamette Valley
wine country, about 1 hour south of Portland, where the group also lunched at the well-known Dundee Bistro, in Dundee
Oregon. The highlight was at Chehalem, where we were allowed to walk out into the vineyards and sample pinot noir grapes
off the vine only a few days before harvest, then taste the wine made from those same grapes in last year's vintage.

That evening, Neilson Abeel graciously hosted the group at a reception in his Portland "Pearl District" loft, and we
heard from the Dutch Honorary Counsul, Mr. Ted Runstein who outlined the activities of the Consulate in and around Portland.
Afterwards the group dined at the "Paragon" restaurant, also in "The Pearl", and continued conversations about
common interests relating to our Dutch heritage, and I must admit, about the upcoming elections, a subject currently very difficult to avoid.
Before we adjourned, there was a brief discussion about the next PNW branch meeting, and presently it appears that, with the help
of Richard Van Slyke and his wife Vivienne, that meeting will occur in their home town of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Goals
Having been to a Branch meeting in Seattle and hosted one in Ketchum, I understand one of the major impediments
I need to deal with somehow in improving the Pacific Northwest Branch is the physical distance that separates the
members. My goal is, understanding this obstacle, to bring the membership closer together on both a personal and
Holland Society level. I am certain, having met quite a few of the members, that accomplishing this goal will be
both enjoyable and rewarding in many different ways.
