The Library of the Holland Society of New York, now housed at 20 West 44th Street in Manhattan, is an invaluable resource for those pursuing New Netherland studies, especially genealogy and family history. The library's collection includes a large amount of information on the history and culture of the families that populated the Dutch colonies in America over three centuries ago. While this collection focuses primarily on New Amsterdam and Hudson River settlements, it also follows early Dutch and allied migrations in North America.
There are about 7,000 books in the collection. Approximately 3,000 volumes deal with regional histories (present day New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Ohio), 3,000 are family histories and genealogies, and the remaining 1,000 volumes include an assortment of monographs on genealogical research, early American history, the Netherlands, Dutch language, art, and architecture, and religion. An extensive vertical file collection includes letters, photographs, genealogies and press clippings. All Holland Society publications are also accessible, including the Society Year books and the journal de Halve Maen. Other resources include early records of the Reformed Dutch Church, which provides invaluable information on births, marriages and deaths in New Netherland. There are about 109 volumes of these records and they are becoming computer accessible.
The library also subscribes to historical and genealogical society publications, collecting newsletters of family organizations with ancestry in New Netherland.
Fee-based Genealogical Research
If you are unable to visit the Library, the Society has a genealogist on staff who provides genealogical
research utilizing the library's collection for a fee. Please e-mail hollsoc@aol.com with a
