Old Bergen County/Central New Jersey Branch Meeting
Sunday, June 8, 2008
On a steaming hot New Jersey Sunday afternoon, June 8, the members of the Old Bergen County/Central New Jersey branch gathered at
the beautiful home of Carlton and Betty Durling, River House, for a luncheon. Greg Outwater, Branch President, arranged the outing,
which included a delightful luncheon donated by the Durlings. Greg and his father, Edwin, who had traveled from Sun Valley,
picked us up at the train station in Hoboken, New Jersey and we enjoyed the air conditioned ride out to the Durling estate.
There were three generations of the Durling family present to greet us upon our arrival. After enjoying cool drinks and
the extensive Durling collection of equestrian art, we sat down and enjoyed a delightful luncheon. National President John B.
VanDerbeek IV and his Wife, Diane were present.
After the luncheon, we went to the nearby East Jersey Olde Towne Village and toured the Church of the Three Mile
Run at Piscataway, New Jersey. The village and church provided an exciting peek into the life of our ancestors in the 18th century.
It was a wonderful surprise to be joined at this meeting by Robert Bogart, who handed John VanDerbeek his just completed
application for membership in the Holland Society of New York. Bob was one of the drivers who provided a colorful
description of growing up in central New Jersey, and interestingly was acquainted with John VanDerbeek's father, aunts,
and a number of his first cousins who grew up in the same area. John was able to arrange to have Bob's application
voted upon at the June 12 Board of Trustees meeting and we now welcome Bob as a new member of the Holland Society of New York.
A wonderful time was had by all at this branch meeting.
